Fall 2025

Umami is a cultural publication that spotlights home cooks by encouraging readers to ignite creativity and cultivate a space in their kitchen that feels well-loved.

Youthful and active layouts bring the reader along on a journey, learning about a home cook’s most nostalgic childhood recipes and another’s experience of harnessing authenticity in the culinary world.

This wordmark process GIF reflects an experimentation with letterforms that best communicate a visual language consistent with Umami.

The final output of continuous curved letters resembles the shape of pasta, nodding to the playful and unserious nature of the issue. Similarly, the bowl that hugs the “a” creates a sense of home and comfort.

Umami reminds readers that the kitchen is a place where mess and play are welcome.

The contents provide readers with a guide to explore the stories and memories formed in the home. Here, it is encouraged to embrace life surrounding food; the kitchen is not a source of stress but rather an opportunity for connection.
“Noodle Nostalgia” reminisces on the Sunday dinners at grandma’s, where the evening is spent in endless conversations and shared stories. Youthful typographic composition and use of color are a reminder of simpler times in adolescence and of the value of a slow, thoughtful existence in the kitchen.

“Noodles in the Neighborhood” tells the story of a renowned culinary artist whose work reflects everyday life. The visual language and textures created in the typography portray this authentic and rooted identity, providing a greater sense of relatability to Umami.
